Biomimicry: Changing HVAC Energy Consumption (and  thousands of other things)

We talk a lot at Encycle about how the communication among honey bees inspired our Swarm Logic HVAC energy management software. This is just one example of biomimicry – the art and science of mimicking the elegant simplicity of mother nature to solve complex human problems. There are literally thousands of examples of biomimicry in action.

  • Wind turbine blades inspired by the flippers of humpback whales that are 40% more efficient
  • Smart phone chips that copy the way the brain and ears work together to separate signal from noise
  • Large building complexes that use 90 percent less energy by mimicking the cooling chimneys and tunnels of termite dens
  • And, in our case, rooftop air-conditioning units that leverage the way bees work together for the mutual benefit of the hive to cut energy consumption by 15-25%

These are just a few of the ways we’ve copied nature to make our lives better.
